Embark on a captivating approximately 7-kilometre-long hike through a volcanic desert, reminiscent of a lunar landscape, with unparalleled views of Mount Etna’s summit craters as the highlight. Itinerary
8:00 am – 8:30 am: Meeting in Catania
Meet your guide at your chosen accommodation or the designated meeting point in Catania, marking the commencement of an exciting adventure.
Scenic Drive and Introduction:
Embark on a comfortable 1.5-hour drive to the volcano area, relishing the picturesque journey. Engage in an informative chat with your guide, who will outline the day’s itinerary, safety guidelines, and share fascinating facts about Mount Etna.
Cable Car Ride to 2500m:
Begin the tour with a cable car ride from Rifugio Sapienza (1900 metres) to 2500 metres, provided by Funivia dell’Etna.
Hiking Experience up to 2900 m:
Embark on a hike through the volcanic desert, encountering recent lava flows. Marvel at the breathtaking views of the Valle del Bove, a vast depression formed by the collapse of an ancient volcanic structure.
Ascend the volcanic cone created during the 2001/2002 eruption, offering a spectacular view of summit craters, flank craters on the southern slopes, and a panoramic vista of the Ionian Coast from Syracuse to Taormina.
Return to Rifugio Sapienza at 1900 metres, descending the sandy slopes of Rocca Sabbiosa and enjoying the whimsical forms of Silvestri Craters (Crateri Silvestri).
Relax and Return to Catania:
Wind down and relax during the return journey to Catania, arriving back around 2:30 – 3:00 pm, concluding the high-altitude trekking on Mount Etna.
